How to Install a Stylish, Durable and Economical Kitchen Splashback

Industrial & Manufacturing Blog

If you are looking for an inexpensive but stylish solution for a tired-looking kitchen, installing an acrylic splashback is certainly an excellent option. Any handy person is capable of fitting one merely by following a few simple steps and using basic tools.

Here's a quick breakdown on why this material is becoming an increasingly popular choice with so many home renovators and what you need to know to complete this amazing project.

Why Choose Acrylic

Acrylic is a type of thermoplastic which is classed as a type of polymer. The acrylic commonly used for splashbacks is a form of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).

The properties of this polymer make it perfectly suited to the kitchen environment. It is less susceptible to grease and dust than other materials. A vital element in a kitchen is cleanliness, and this material offers an extremely hygienic and easy-to-clean option. A wet cloth wipe over is all that is needed.

This polymer has the advantage over other materials for a splashback option. Glass is heavy and notoriously easy to break, and a tile splashback is so much more time-consuming to install as it involves messy grout that tends to trap mold over time.

The material is extremely strong, but at the same time, it is lightweight and easy to install in the home. Therefore, even those with limited skills in DIY can fit a splashback and create a brand-new look for the kitchen.

Where to Source Your Acrylic

There is an abundance of suppliers that cater for a home handyman installation. They have a wide range of acrylic kitchen splashback sheets. These are designed to suit all budgets and tastes. You can quickly locate your nearest supplier online to order a panel of your chosen colour. You can opt to have it cut to size or cut it yourself with simple hand tools.

Preparing the Area

Make sure to thoroughly clean the surface of the existing wall .It needs to be dust-, moisture- and grease-free. Check that it is quite smooth. There should be no bumps or even slight protrusions.

If you are covering over tiles, ensure that they are firmly attached. You may need to use tile adhesive to secure any loose ones.

Installing Your Splashback

When receiving your acrylic panel, it will have a thin film of protective polyethylene on it. Make sure to leave this in place while you record measurements and begin cutting.

Measuring and Cutting

Gather your tools together. You need a tape measure, spirit level, caulking gun with silicone adhesive and a jigsaw.

Be precise and careful. Remember the adage – "measure twice, cut once".

Place your acrylic panel face down on a clean surface and mark out exactly where you need to place cut-outs on the protective film.

To have more control and avoid any splintering, first drill holes where the cuts are marked, and then, using a quick up-and-down action, finish off with the jigsaw for a precise incision.

Applying Adhesive

Apply a silicone adhesive to the wall using an S-shaped pattern with your caulking gun. Remove the protective film from the side of the panel that attaches to the wall.

Press the panel firmly to the wall spreading the silicone evenly. Check that it is straight with a spirit level. There is a very small window of opportunity to make small adjustments and re-align it. When satisfied, leave it in place until you are sure that it has fully bonded. This usually takes around twenty-four hours or so.

Finally, remove the protective film from the front of the panel and take time to appreciate your handywork and your smart-looking kitchen.
